You might not have the White House lawn on which to create a vegetable garden, but your backyard or patio will do! The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) will present a series of four workshops on organic vegetable gardening and how to preserve fresh fruits and vegetables.
On Sunday, May 3, from 2 to 4 p.m., NOFA-NJ Vice President Stephanie Harris and Pam Flory, farmer and educator, will present “Planning and Creating Your Organic Victory Garden” at Duke Farms, 80 Rt. 206 South, Hillsborough, N.J. The admission fee is $15 for NOFA-NJ members, $18 for non-members.
To register:
Pre-registration by Tuesday, April, 28 is required. Call the NOFA-NJ office at (908) 371-1111 x 101 to sign up or send a check to NOFA-NJ, 334 River Road, Hillsborough, N.J., 08844.
The second workshop in the series, “Problem Solving in the Garden,” with Mike McGrath of NPR’s “You Bet Your Garden,” will take place on Saturday, May 30, at the Princeton Day School in Princeton, N.J. In July and August, the kitchen of the Princeton Day School will be the site of the third and fourth “Victory Garden” workshops; the first will demonstrate how to preserve fresh fruits by canning, freezing, and drying, and the final workshop in the series will show you how to preserve your fresh vegetables by canning, freezing, drying or creating a root cellar. Stay tuned for dates and times!
For a small capital investment, you can grow and store healthy, nutritious produce for the whole year while enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, and good exercise! This series is designed to help the novice gardener get started, but seasoned gardeners and anyone who wants to know how to preserve fresh produce will find the discussions and demonstrations of interest.
