During this hands-on course\, you’ll learn how to observe\, identify\, and better understand their natural history. \n  \nWhat You’ll Learn\n  \nThrough fieldwork and short classroom sessions\, you’ll gain practical skills in: \n\nIdentifying live bees to genus\nPhotographing bees in the field\nNetting and preparing bee specimens\nRecording and sharing your observations\nUnderstanding bee ecology and behavior\n\n\nShort lectures throughout the course will connect your field observations to current scientific research and ecological concepts. \n  \nWho Should Attend?\n\nThis workshop is designed for:\nNaturalists\nStudents\nResearchers\nLand managers\nGardeners\nAnyone curious about native pollinators\n\nNo previous experience with wild bees is required.\n\nProgram Information\nParticipants will spend part of each day outdoors. Expect to walk over uneven terrain and remain outside for several hours at a time. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable footwear suitable for field conditions.\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\nDuke Farms is committed to equitable nature access\, and the following accommodations may be available\, depending on the program: \n\nPaved\, flat trails\nInstructors with voice amplifiers\nAssistive listening devices (ALDs) for indoor programs\nAmerican Sign Language Interpreters\, with ten (10) days’ notice\nKultureCity sensory bags\nWe welcome working\, trained service animals as described by the ADA\n\nWe may be able to provide additional\, reasonable accommodations not listed here; please contact us at registrations@dukefarms.org. \n  \n\n\nYour Instructors\nNick Dorian\, Ph.D. is an ecologist\, educator\, and naturalist. Currently\, Nick is an Assistant Professor of Biology at City College of New York where he studies the ecology of urban gardens. \nMax McCarthy is a Ph.D. candidate at Rutgers University\, where he studies populations of the rare Parnassia mining bee and the pollination ecology of their host plant\, Grass-of-Parnassus (Parnassia). \nTogether\, Nick and Max have a decade of experience as environmental educators and are the authors of watchingbees.com\, a free online field guide to wild bees of The Northeast. \n  \n\n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nAll programs begin at the Farm Barn Orientation Center unless otherwise noted. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Nighttime Moth Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Educator Toni on a nighttime walk in search of local moth species with a chance to see them up close!\n\n\nButterflies often steal the spotlight. Moths deserve attention\, too. \n  \nThese remarkable insects pollinate flowers and provide food for birds\, bats\, and other wildlife. Some species fly during the day. Many become active only after sunset. \n  \nHere’s what we will cover: \n-Describe biology and ecological importance of moths \n-Observe and practice ID of local moth species on-site at Duke Farms using a blacklight station \n-Practice community science by logging observations through iNaturalist \n  \nYou may never look at moths the same way again. \n  \nWe will be meeting first behind the Farm Barn Orientation Center before departing for our program! \nThis class involves traveling less than 1 mile on mixed (paved and unpaved) surfaces\, with participants moving for the entire duration. Most program routes can be adapted to accommodate mobility needs. \n  \n(Photo Credit: Snowberry Clearwing\, taken by Sara DiVito) \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nDid you know members receive 10% off all programs?
