SUMMARY:Orchids Under the Full Moon
DESCRIPTION:Families are complicated—Orchidaceae most of all.\n\n\nA bracing winter night’s walk\, illuminated by March’s full moon\, transports us to the Orchid Range\, and from there: Panama? Nepal? Ghana? The incredible diversity of color and form in this global flower family is ours to explore\, and their hidden evolutionary stories ours to read—if we know how. Are orchids’ unique\, co-evolved entanglements with pollinator\, fungus\, and land what give rise to their reputation as fragile and fickle plants\, or is this what simply what happens whenever a species is displaced from its native habitat? \nThis program will take place entirely outdoors. Please dress for the weather. Participants will travel about 2 miles on paved\, gravel\, and dirt surfaces. \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nDid you know members receive 10% off all programs? To learn more and become a member\, visit dukefarms.org/membership. \nAll programs begin at the Farm Barn Orientation Center unless otherwise noted. \nRegistration is required. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. Cancellations received at least 48 hours in advance are eligible for a refund\, if applicable. \nPrograms at Duke Farms are held rain or shine\, but in the event of severe or impeditive weather\, classes may be canceled. Email notice will be given as early as possible via email and refunds will be issued in the case of cancellations. \n\n\nAccessibility\nDuke Farms is committed to equitable nature access\, and the following accommodations may be available\, depending on the program: \n\nPaved\, flat trails\nInstructors with voice amplifiers\nAssistive listening devices (ALDs) for indoor programs\nAmerican Sign Language Interpreters\, with ten (10) days’ notice\nKultureCity sensory bags\nWe welcome working\, trained service animals as described by the ADA\n\nWe may be able to provide additional\, reasonable accommodations not listed here; please contact us at registrations@dukefarms.org. \n\n\nBecome a Member\nInvest in our efforts to protect wildlife\, revitalize habitats\, and model clean energy solutions by becoming a member. DESCRIPTION:A story highlighting how restoration leads to conservation.\n\n\nJoin us for a special program that connects the past\, present\, and future of ecological restoration along the Raritan River. Over the course of this two-hour experience\, we will travel to the Raritan River to explore how dam removals and waterway restoration have improved habitat for wildlife and water quality. SUMMARY:Signs of Spring
DESCRIPTION:Birds\, buds\, bees\, or bless yous—what signs tell you that spring has sprung?\n\n\nNothing but the return of spring manages to feel so new and so familiar at the same time. On this outing\, we’ll take time to read the land for signs of the changing season: bursting buds\, birdsong\, buzzing bees\, and spring ephemerals—the inconspicuous early bloomers that serve as vital sources of nectar and pollen for native insects. Come with us in search of these fascinating plants and all the other highlights of this season of awakening. \nThis program will take place entirely outdoors. Please dress for the weather.
