SUMMARY:Nighttime Moth Walk (for National Moth Week)
DESCRIPTION:Join Seasonal Educator Toni on a nighttime walk in search of local moth species with a chance to see them up close!\n\n\nMoths are appreciated less often than their butterfly relatives\, but they are still important to their ecosystems as pollinators and food to other wildlife. Some moths can be seen during the day\, but some are more elusive and only active under the cover of night… In turn\, this nighttime walk will teach about the local diversity of moth species that can be seen at Duke Farms. We will even be using a blacklight to potentially attract some moths for close\, easy observation and identification! This event will also be held during National Moth Week\, a citizen science project that aims to study and record moth populations during the last week of July. \n\nHere’s what we will cover: \n\n-Describe biology and ecological importance of moths\n-Observe and practice ID of local moth species on-site at Duke Farms using a blacklight station\n-Practice community science by logging observations through iNaturalist\n\n\nWe will be meeting first behind the Farm Barn Orientation Center before departing for our program! \nThis class involves traveling less than 1 mile on mixed (paved and unpaved) surfaces\, with participants moving for the entire duration. DESCRIPTION:The birds in your backyard have amazing stories to tell. Learn how to recognize the species you see every day and discover what makes each one unique. \n  \nAn educator from The Raptor Trust will introduce you to common local birds and explain their behaviors\, adaptations\, and habitats. You’ll also learn why many birds are admitted to The Raptor Trust’s Wild Bird Hospital and how simple changes in your yard can provide food\, shelter\, and nesting spaces that help birds thrive. \n  \nMeet one of The Raptor Trust’s live ambassador birds during the program. These permanent avian residents cannot return to the wild because of their injuries\, but they now play an important role in educating the public and inspiring wildlife conservation. \n  \nWhether you’re a lifelong birder or simply curious about the birds outside your window\, you’ll leave with practical tips and a new appreciation for your feathered neighbors. \n  \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nDid you know members receive 10% off all programs? SUMMARY:An Evening Chat with Bats
DESCRIPTION:Join Seasonal Educator Toni on a nighttime walk with bats to observe them\, listen to their calls\, and appreciate the roles they perform!\n\n\nBats are often misunderstood as pests or carrying diseases\, but despite their scary reputation they serve important roles such as pollinators or insect predators. Here at Duke Farms\, we can observe bats in the wild—and even get to listen to their calls! This nighttime walk will showcase some local bat species seen on campus\, as well as how they communicate with echolocation using bioacoustics technology. \n  \nWe will be meeting first behind the Farm Barn Orientation Center before departing for our program! This class involves traveling less than 1 mile on mixed (paved and unpaved) surfaces\, with participants moving for the entire duration. DESCRIPTION:Join Seasonal Educator Toni on a guided birdwatching walk around Duke Farms to learn about some basic yet useful bird ID tips!\n\n\nWe’ve heard the question before: What’s that bird? We have many types at Duke Farms\, and this guided walk will teach you easy\, useful bird ID tips while looking at some common species in the area. But with fall migration season in swing\, there’s a chance to see something rare or passing over from other parts of the country! \n  \nWe will also be logging our observations onto eBird\, a community science tool that keeps track of when and how often different species appear. Binoculars will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own gear! \n  \nWe will be meeting first behind the Farm Barn Orientation Center before departing for our program!
