SUMMARY:Birding by Sight & Sound
DESCRIPTION:Learn to bird by sight and sound!\n\n\nJoin us for a 2-hour guided bird walk focused on building your bird identification skills in the field. We’ll practice spotting key visual field marks while also tuning our ears to recognize common bird songs and calls. Because it’s nesting season\, many birds will be especially vocal and active in defending their territories—making this an ideal time of year to observe and learn. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to sharpen your skills\, this walk offers a hands-on introduction to identifying birds by sight and sound in an outdoor setting. \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nDid you know members receive 10% off all programs? To learn more and become a member\, visit dukefarms.org/membership. \nAll programs begin at the Farm Barn Orientation Center unless otherwise noted. \nRegistration is required. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. Cancellations received at least 48 hours in advance are eligible for a refund\, if applicable. \nPrograms at Duke Farms are held rain or shine\, but in the event of severe or impeditive weather\, classes may be canceled. Email notice will be given as early as possible via email and refunds will be issued in the case of cancellations. \n\n\nAccessibility\nDuke Farms is committed to equitable nature access\, and the following accommodations may be available\, depending on the program: \n\nPaved\, flat trails\nInstructors with voice amplifiers\nAssistive listening devices (ALDs) for indoor programs\nAmerican Sign Language Interpreters\, with ten (10) days’ notice\nKultureCity sensory bags\nWe welcome working\, trained service animals as described by the ADA\n\nWe may be able to provide additional\, reasonable accommodations not listed here; please contact us at registrations@dukefarms.org. \n\n\nBecome a Member\nInvest in our efforts to protect wildlife\, revitalize habitats\, and model clean energy solutions by becoming a member. Membership includes discounted classes and access to other members exclusive experiences. \nVisit dukefarms.org/membership to learn more. \n\n\nJeremy Cohen has been birding and doing wildlife photography for over 15 years\, is a guide for NJ Audubon\, and has extensive knowledge of Eastern US birds and of birding by ear. In his day job\, he is an ecologist at Yale University using big data\, GIS and machine learning to study how North American birds are responding to climate change across different regions and species.

SUMMARY:Member Exclusive: Summer Grassland Birding
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an early-morning adventure into Duke Farms’ highest quality habitat.\n\n\nStep into one of our conservation grasslands at the height of summer and discover a habitat alive with sound and movement. This guided birding experience focuses on grassland specialists such as bobolinks and meadowlarks—species whose presence reflects the health of restored meadow ecosystems. \nAlong the way\, you’ll learn how Duke Farms manages these landscapes to support breeding birds and biodiversity\, and why grassland restoration plays a vital role in regional conservation. It’s an opportunity not just to observe wildlife\, but to understand the systems that help it thrive. \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nThis is a member exclusive program. To learn more and become a member\, visit dukefarms.org/membership. \nAll programs begin at the Farm Barn Orientation Center unless otherwise noted. \nRegistration is required. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. \nPrograms at Duke Farms are held rain or shine\, but in the event of severe or impeditive weather\, classes may be canceled. Notice will be given as early as possible via email and refunds will be issued in the case of cancellations. \n\n\nAccessibility\nThis class involves traveling about 1 mile on unpaved (gravel\, grass\, dirt) surfaces\, with participants moving for the entire duration. Most program routes can be adapted to accommodate mobility needs. \nDuke Farms is committed to equitable nature access\, and the following accommodations may be available\, depending on the program: \n\nPaved\, flat trails\nInstructors with voice amplifiers\nAssistive listening devices (ALDs) for indoor programs\nAmerican Sign Language Interpreters\, with ten (10) days’ notice\nKultureCity sensory bags\nWe welcome working\, trained service animals as described by the ADA\n\nWe may be able to provide additional\, reasonable accommodations not listed here; contact us at membership@dukefarms.org.

SUMMARY:Birds of Duke Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join Seasonal Educator Toni on a guided birdwatching walk around Duke Farms to learn about the most common species observed in the area!\n\n\nWe’ve heard the question before: What’s that bird? We have many types at Duke Farms\, and this guided walk will help teach you about the most common species observed around the area. We will also try logging our observations onto eBird\, a community science tool that keeps track of when different species appear and how often. Binoculars and some ID books will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own gear! \nPhoto Credit: Baltimore Oriole (taken by Toni Tamberelli) \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nDid you know members receive 10% off all programs? SUMMARY:An Evening Chat with Bats
DESCRIPTION:Join a nighttime walk with bats to observe them\, listen to their calls\, and appreciate the roles they perform!\n\n\nBats are often misunderstood as pests or carrying diseases\, but despite their scary reputation they serve important roles such as pollinators or insect predators. Here at Duke Farms\, we can observe bats in the wild—and even get to listen to their calls! This nighttime walk will showcase some local bat species seen on campus\, as well as how they communicate with echolocation using bioacoustics technology. \n(Photo Credit: Maximilian Ruther\, 2019) \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nDid you know members receive 10% off all programs?
