SUMMARY:Is Green Always Good? - Caution of Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join Seasonal Educator Toni to uncover the invasive plant species hiding in plain sight!\n\n\nWhen the foliage starts turning green\, we can easily lose track of just how many different plants there are in an area. However\, it’s not until we take a closer look that we notice some invasive species have sneaked into the mix! So\, that bears the question: is a green plant always a good plant? With your help\, this guided walk will reveal some non-native plants that can be found at Duke Farms—as well as throughout the state of New Jersey. Additionally\, we will investigate ways they were able to become established and reflect on ways to ensure our native species are not replaced. \n  \nWe will be meeting first behind the Farm Barn Orientation Center before departing for our program! \nThis class involves traveling about 1 mile on mixed (paved and unpaved) surfaces\, with participants moving for the entire duration. Keep an eye out for brilliant Goldfinches as they flash across the sky in bright streaks of yellow. \n\nGrab your favorite adventure buddy and join us for a guided bird walk on Saturday\, August 22\, from 7:00–9:00 a.m. Together\, we’ll search for goldfinches\, warblers\, songbirds\, and many other species that call Duke Farms home. \n  \nBring your curiosity\, your binoculars\, and your sense of adventure. Every walk offers a chance to discover something new. \n\n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Discover some of our most beautiful—and sometimes delightfully fragrant—orchids during a special evening tour beneath August’s Sturgeon Moon. \n  \nFamilies are complicated. Orchidaceae most of all. \n  \nOn this inviting summer night walk\, the light of the full moon will guide us to the Orchid Range—and from there\, around the world. Journey through the remarkable diversity of this global plant family\, from Panama to Nepal to Ghana\, as we explore the extraordinary colors\, forms\, and adaptations that make orchids unlike any other flowers. \n  \nAlong the way\, we’ll uncover the hidden evolutionary stories written into every bloom. Are orchids truly as fragile and finicky as their reputation suggests? Or are their intricate relationships with pollinators\, fungi\, and native habitats simply difficult to recreate outside the ecosystems where they evolved? DESCRIPTION:Join Seasonal Educator Toni to learn about iNaturalist\, how to use it\, and its importance as a community science tool!\n\n\nBeing out in nature can be both fun and educational\, especially with tools such as iNaturalist that help us learn about what we find. At the same time\, using these tools provides important info for scientists\, embodying the idea of “community science.” Join us to learn the basics of iNaturalist\, an app that anyone can use to identify wildlife and contribute data for public use\, as well as see how to use it on your own when out in nature.
