SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Wander
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the sun’s return with an expedition to find all the life it still sustains.\n\n\nDepending on your outlook\, the winter solstice is either the longest\, darkest night of the year—or a threshold to brighter days ahead. But let’s save the philosophy for nightfall and make the most of the daylight we do have. After all\, even on the shortest day of the year\, there’s still photosynthesis to get on with\, food to scrounge up\, shelter to seek\, and (for us humans) a quiet continuity of wintertime life to get out there and find. \nThis program will take place entirely outdoors. Please dress for the weather. Participants will travel about 2 miles on paved\, gravel\, and dirt surfaces. \nMeet in front of the Farm Barn Orientation Center for check-in. We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes before the start of class. We cannot accommodate late arrivals and the class will depart on time. \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nRegistration is required. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. Cancellations received at least 48 hours in advance are eligible for a refund\, if applicable. Programs at Duke Farms are RAIN or SHINE\, but in the event of severe weather\, classes may be canceled. Email notice will be given as early as possible via email\, and refunds will be issued in the case of cancellations. \n\n\nAccessibility\nDuke Farms is committed to equitable nature access\, and participants in our programs can expect or request the following accommodations: \n\nPaved\, flat trails\nInstructors with voice amplifiers\nAssistive listening devices (ALDs) for indoor programs\nAmerican Sign Language Interpreters\, with ten (10) days’ notice\nKultureCity sensory bags\nWe welcome working\, trained service animals as described by the ADA\n\nWe may be able to provide additional\, reasonable accommodations not listed here; please contact us at registrations@dukefarms.org.

SUMMARY:Conifer Walk
DESCRIPTION:Pining to spruce up your evergreen knowledge? This is the class fir yew!\n\n\nWhen the bare branches of winter start to get you down\, turn to the conifers for a breath of fresh\, pine-scented air. More ancient and more steadfast than the deciduous divas of autumn\, our native coniferous trees like red cedar and black spruce deserve a spotlight too. On this walk\, beginners to tree ID and ecology will get acquainted with several common species\, learn what to look for to tell a spruce from a cedar or a hemlock from a pine\, and discuss the fascinating ecology and evolutionary history that sets these trees apart. \nThis program will take place entirely outdoors. Please dress for the weather. Participants will travel about 2 miles on paved\, gravel\, and dirt surfaces. \nMeet in front of the Farm Barn Orientation Center for check-in. SUMMARY:Orchids After Dark
DESCRIPTION:A nighttime walk through our orchid range will have you seeing this plant family in a whole new light—literally.\n\n\nA bracing winter night walk transports us to the Orchid Range\, and from there: Panama? Nepal? Ghana? The incredible diversity of color and form in this global flower family is ours to explore\, and the evolutionary stories hidden there are ours to read—if we know how. Are their unique\, co-evolved entanglements with pollinator\, fungus\, and land what give rise to orchids’ reputation as fragile and fickle plants\, or is this what simply what happens whenever a species is unmoored from its native habitat? \nThis program is appropriate for adults and will take place partially outdoors. Please dress for the weather. Participants will travel about 2 miles on paved and gravel surfaces. \nMeet in front of the Farm Barn Orientation Center for check-in. SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time\, but in the woods we’re more limited in what we can do.\n\n\nCourse Overview\nWFA students will learn practical wilderness first aid skills and gain the confidence to step up\, make decisions\, and ultimately create positive outcomes from unpredictable situations. \nWe don’t have all the medical resources we have at home when we’re in the woods\, so it’s vital to have the essential tools\, the right skills\, and know how to improvise when faced with a medical emergency in the backcountry. Practical hands-on exercises and scenarios will improve retention and confidence. Developed for the public from years of teaching this course to Search & Rescue professionals\, students now benefit by learning the most current practices for patient assessment\, trauma interventions like splinting and bleeding control\, environmental emergencies like venomous snakebites and bee stings\, medical emergencies like strokes and chest pain\, illnesses\, and more. These skills not only apply just to hiking\, but anytime we’re in the outdoors. We welcome students from all outdoor pursuits – scout leaders\, quad riders\, beachgoers\, mountain bikers\, fishermen\, adventure racers\, and even those who just enjoy relaxing at the family BBQ. Having the knowledge\, skills\, and confidence to step up and help in a time of need is invaluable. \nUpon completion\, students will receive a 2-year ASHI WFA certification\, which is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and accepted by Scouts BSA and GSUSA. \nFeatured Topics\n\nPatient assessment\nTrauma interventions – Bleeding control\, splinting\, wound care\, etc…\nMedical interventions – Stroke\, diabetes\, allergies\, breathing difficulty\, etc…\nEnvironmental emergencies – Heat\, cold\, bites & stings\, plants\, weather\, etc…\nBackcountry first aid kit contents\n\nSchedule\nDecember 10 from 6:00PM-10:00PM \nDecember 12 from 6:00PM-10:00PM \nDecember 14 from 9:00AM-5:00PM \n\n\nAbout the Instructors\nJoe Galvan is a lifelong hiker and in his element when sharing outdoor experiences\, mentoring others\, and connecting with the outdoor-minded in our community.
