DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nLecture material on how trees fit into our local ecosystems—both today and into the future—will contextualize the strong focus on tree identification necessary to understand these complex organisms. Some background in basic tree identification is recommended\, but not required. This course will be geared toward educators\, land managers\, ecologists\, conservationists\, shade tree commission members\, and other professionals. \nFeatured Topics\n\nTree biology\, structure\, and reproduction\nBiodiversity and tree ID through the lens of biology\n\n\n\n\n\nContinuing Education Credits\nThe Spring Dendrology Workshop is approved for credits from the following organizations. \nAmerican Society for Landscape Architecture: 4 hours \nEcological Society of America: 1 CEU \nInternational Society for Arboriculture: TBD \nNew Jersey Board of Tree Experts: TBD \nNew Jersey Urban and Community Forestry (NJ UCF): 4 CEUs \n\n\n\n\nPrerequisites\nThis program assumes participants have a basic knowledge of native species identification and understand general ecology concepts. Please note that classes will take place partially outdoors and will require travelling several miles on various trail types (paved and unpaved) and uneven terrain for up to 3 hours. \n\n\n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nPre-registration is required\, walk-ins are not be accepted. DESCRIPTION:Wetlands are a unique habitat; meet some of the resident flora and fauna that call them home.\n\n\nMay is American Wetlands Month\, making it the perfect time to learn about the importance of wetlands to your community. Join us to learn what wetlands are\, what flora and fauna live in them\, and how they adapt to this environment. Participants will enjoy a guided walk through the restored and constructed NRCS wetlands at Duke Farms. While no waders are needed\, bring shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy. \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nRegistration is required. Meet in front of the Farm Barn Orientation Center 10 to 15 minutes prior to the start of the program. \nPlease let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. Cancellations received at least 48 hours in advance are eligible for a refund\, if applicable. Programs at Duke Farms are RAIN or SHINE\, but in the event of severe weather\, classes may be canceled. SUMMARY:In Search of Haiku\, Connecting with Nature
DESCRIPTION:A Ginko at Duke Farms\n\n\nExplore the art of haiku on this ginko\, a haiku-writing walk where participants open their senses\, sauntering and observing attentively. Naturalist Jeff Hoagland\, an award-winning haiku poet and editor\, will begin the process by sharing some haiku for all to briefly examine the characteristics of these tiny poems. Participants will consider the “birth moment” of these haiku\, with the intent of chronicling the natural world through observation and reflection. \nDuring the ginko\, the haiku walk\, participants will get close to nature\, making observations and field notes that may become the substance of haiku. Small journals will be provided. We will walk the grounds of Duke Farms\, visiting the Hay Barn and the Orchid Range. After the walk Jeff will help guide participants through the process of finding and crafting haiku among your notes. \nThis program is suitable for beginning as well as seasoned haiku poets.
