DESCRIPTION:If “grey hairstreak” sounds like a bold style choice and a “question mark” is just that\, this is the class for you.\n\n\nAugust is the best time of year to learn about our butterflies in New Jersey. The weather is hot\, the sun is bright\, and the meadows are booming with blooming wildflowers. In this introductory class\, participants will walk through two different meadows to learn about and observe some of our most common native butterflies. One of our most well-known native butterflies\, the monarch\, will be making its journey south for the winter\, and if we’re lucky\, we’ll get the chance to spot them too! \nCheck out more upcoming classes in the For Starters series. \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nRegistration is required. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. Cancellations received at least 48 hours in advance are eligible for a refund\, if applicable. \nPrograms at Duke Farms are held rain or shine\, but in the event of severe weather\, classes may be canceled. Ever since\, people around the world have continued to curate herbarium collections\, once poetically called “dry gardens” (it’s better in Italian). \nWhile their reasons have ranged from medicinal practice and botanical education to scientific research and artistic expression\, their techniques have remained largely the same—and not too difficult to pick up\, as it turns out! Join us in this class to create pressed plant specimens that are as beautiful as they are scientifically valuable and worthy of the herbaria where they may one day end up. \n\n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nRegistration is required. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and an M.A. in Public and Organizational Relations. She has been birding since she was nine years old when she saw her first Great Blue Heron along the Raritan River. She’s been leading bird walks since 2018 and is always looking to engage new birders in her lifelong passion.
