DESCRIPTION:Birds in the Landscape\n\n\nExplore the birds of Duke Farms through this 2-day intensive short course. Each day blends field data collection and classroom learning\, offering a unique opportunity to sharpen avian identification skills while exploring the role birds play in the ecosystem. Learn how birds serve as indicators of ecosystem quality and inform conservation and land management decisions. Lecture and field content includes ecology\, behavior\, anatomy\, research techniques\, and conservation efforts. \nDay 1\n\nLecture: Avian ecology\, role of birds in the ecosystem\, avian field methods\nField: Birding skills\, field identification\, single-observer point counts\n\nDay 2\n\nLecture: Birds as bioindicators for land management\, land use history\, integrating data into landscape management\nField: Small group data collection and discussion\n\n\n\nContinuing Education Credits\nThis course is approved for credits from the following organizations. \nEcological Society of America: TBD \n \n\n\nPrerequisites\nThis program assumes participants have a basic knowledge of native avian species identification and understand general ecology concepts. Please note that field classes will take place fully outdoors and will require travelling several miles on various trail types (paved and unpaved) and uneven terrain for up to 2 hours. \n \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nAll programs begin at the Farm Barn Orientation Center unless otherwise noted. \nRegistration is required. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. Cancellations received at least 48 hours in advance are eligible for a refund\, if applicable. \nPrograms at Duke Farms are held rain or shine\, but in the event of severe or impeditive weather\, classes may be canceled. DESCRIPTION:Birds\, buds\, bees\, or bless yous—what signs tell you that spring has sprung?\n\n\nNothing but the return of spring manages to feel so new and so familiar at the same time. On this outing\, we’ll take time to read the land for signs of the changing season: bursting buds\, birdsong\, buzzing bees\, and spring ephemerals—the inconspicuous early bloomers that serve as vital sources of nectar and pollen for native insects. Come with us in search of these fascinating plants and all the other highlights of this season of awakening. \nThis program will take place entirely outdoors. Please dress for the weather. Participants will travel about 2 miles on paved\, gravel\, and dirt surfaces. \n\n\nProgram Guidelines\nDid you know members receive 10% off all programs? DESCRIPTION:Parking passes are released every Monday at 12:00 PM (ET) for the upcoming Saturday and often reach capacity quickly. If passes display as “Sold Out\,” no additional reservations are available for that date. There is no off-site parking within walking distance of the main entrance. If passes are fully reserved\, no additional entry options are available. We encourage you to visit on another day. \nEntry is always free.
