2019 New Jersey Land Conservation Rally

4/9/2019 | Habitat Restoration, Sustainability, Stewardship at Home Nora DiChiara, Director, Strategic Planning and Programs

Resources cited in the "Accessibility and Inclusion: A Place for Everyone" Session during the 2019 Land Conservation Rally.

Duke Farms is dedicated to becoming the most inclusive and accessible park in New Jersey. We believe that Duke Farms is a place for all seasons, and a place for everyone. We are striving to make our buildings, trails, and programs more accessible and inclusive for all abilities.

Using our experience at Duke Farms and partnering with the experts at Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living, we will describe our learning, planning and implementation process in increasing accessibility. Since 2012, Duke Farms has installed accessible trails, modified bathrooms, improved parking and signage, constructed universal design gardens, provided accessible transportation and improved organizational understanding of accessibility and inclusion.

During this presentation, workshop participants learned that accessibility planning does not need to be scary, daunting or an expensive process. Access becomes even more important over time, and allows for our land ethics to be shared with everyone.
