Monarch & Meadow Month: Monarch Migration Game

8/12/2020 | Activities

This resource was a collaborative effort on behalf of the Duke Farms Education team.

Download the full PDF here.

At Duke Farms, August marks Monarch and Meadow Month as we focus on the multitude of magnificent stories of the interactions between and among this biodiverse ecosystem. The monarch butterfly is certainly one of the featured creatures, but as the month unfolds, you will soon discover through activities, lesson plans, videos, book links, and creative resources, much more about why our meadows need to be maintained and preserved.

The roundtrip monarch journey takes four generations and covers thousands of miles each way. Their journey is anything but easy - severe weather events, loggers, predators, pesticides, lack of milkweed and nectar sources for sustenance, and human encroachment are all obstacles for our winged friends. Want to experience monarch migration yourself? You can play this game with family or friends - pretend to be butterflies during migration and mimic flight from one location to another, eventually flying full circle. This fun game gets everyone moving while learning about monarch migration.
