Tucked quietly into the landscape at Duke Farms is a small, lovingly maintained pet cemetery. A reflection of Doris Duke’s deep affection for animals and her belief that all creatures deserve care, dignity, and respect.
Doris’s lifelong love for animals wasn’t just personal; it was foundational. From the horses she rode to the dogs who were her loyal companions, to the camels she traveled with, she saw animals not just as pets, but as beings worthy of protection. Today, that compassion lives on across every acre of Duke Farms.
We see her legacy in the safe habitats we restore, the wildlife we monitor, and the way we care for this land as a refuge for both people and animals. Whether it’s the song of a wood thrush in the forest or the flutter of a monarch through the meadow, each moment is a tribute to her enduring belief in the power of nature—and our responsibility to preserve it.
