Field Notes from Duke Farms

Welcome to Field Notes from Duke Farms

This is your seasonal glimpse into the living landscape of Duke Farms—where conservation, restoration, and sustainability come together to shape a healthier future for both people and the planet.

In each issue, we’ll share stories from the field, highlight the species and ecosystems we’re working to protect, and explore how sustainable practices—like regenerative agriculture, habitat restoration, and climate-smart land use—are making an impact right here in New Jersey.

Whether you're a nature enthusiast, lifelong learner, or someone looking for inspiration in how to care for the Earth, Field Notes offers a moment to slow down, tune in, and reconnect with what matters most.

In this Edition:

Experience the Sounds of Nature

Welcome to the wild side of Duke Farms—heard, not seen. This playlist features real, unfiltered audio recordings from our bioacoustics monitoring program, where the land speaks through birdsong, frog calls, insect buzzes, and wind through the trees.

Captured using Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) placed across forests, meadows, wetlands, and gardens, these soundscapes offer a peaceful, immersive way to experience the rhythms of nature—wherever you are.

Take Flight on the Duke Farms Birding Platform

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or simply love watching the sky, the birding platform at Duke Farms offers a front-row seat to one of the most vibrant and dynamic habitats on campus.

Bird Watching Just Got Smarter

New to birding? Or just wondering what bird is making that sound? The free Merlin Bird ID app, created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, helps you identify birds by sound, photo, or a few quick questions.

Raritan River Floodplain Reforestation

This spring we broke ground on a 112-acre restoration project to transform former agricultural fields into a forested floodplain.

The Duke Farms Eagle Cam Streaming 24/7 from a Restored Habitat

At Duke Farms, conservation is more than a mission — it’s a living, breathing reality. Our ongoing restoration work has transformed the landscape into a thriving habitat for wildlife, including one of New Jersey’s most powerful conservation success stories: the return of the bald eagle. Since 2004, a pair of bald eagles has nested on the property, drawing thousands of viewers annually via our live-streaming Eagle Cam.

Upcoming Programs

Duke Farms offers a variety of classes, workshops, and educational programs focused on environmental conservation, sustainability, wildlife, agroecology, and climate resilience.
