About This Event

Ticks are a part of summer—but how much do you really know about them?

Join us for an informative program that separates fact from fiction and explores the science behind these tiny but fascinating arachnids. Drawing on the latest research from the Rutgers Center for Vector Biology and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we’ll discuss how ticks live, where they’re found, and what makes them so successful.

Learn how to:

  • Identify the ticks most commonly found in our region.
  • Understand how ticks find their hosts and why they’re so effective.
  • Separate common myths from evidence-based facts.
  • Reduce your risk of tick bites while enjoying the outdoors.
  • Properly check for and remove ticks after spending time outside.

We’ll also explore emerging research on Alpha-gal syndrome, the tick-associated allergy to red meat, and discuss how changes in our landscapes—including the spread of invasive plant species—may be contributing to increasing tick populations.

Whether you’re an avid hiker, gardener, birder, or simply enjoy spending time outside, this program will provide practical knowledge to help you stay safe while appreciating the natural world.

The more you know, the safer you can be!
