Now that we know what a meadow is, let's talk about one of the very special critters that live in them. Do you know what a monarch butterfly looks like? The monarch butterfly is striking with its black and orange color scheme and stands out when fluttering against a blue sky and verdant backdrop. It looks very different from its younger form, the monarch caterpillar. Get to know the parts that make up monarch anatomy and each function in this resource - it includes an activity on labeling photographs of butterflies and caterpillars.

At Duke Farms, August marks Monarch and Meadow Month as we focus on the multitude of magnificent stories of the interactions between and among this biodiverse ecosystem. The monarch butterfly is certainly one of the featured creatures, but as the month unfolds, you will soon discover through activities, lesson plans, videos, book links, and creative resources, much more about why our meadows need to be maintained and preserved.
