Monarch & Meadow Month: Monarch Tagging

The tagging and releasing of monarch butterflies is a project that started in 1992 to help understand the monarch’s migration patterns. It is a citizen science program lead by the Monarch Watch. A citizen science program includes the collection and analysis of data relating to environmental topics (in this case, it is the monarch population and migration) in which members of the public can take part to help and collaborate with professional scientists. This resource delves into how monarch tagging works and how it benefits the monarch species.

At Duke Farms, August marks Monarch and Meadow Month as we focus on the multitude of magnificent stories of the interactions between and among this biodiverse ecosystem. The monarch butterfly is certainly one of the featured creatures, but as the month unfolds, you will soon discover through activities, lesson plans, videos, book links, and creative resources, much more about why our meadows need to be maintained and preserved.
