Monarch & Meadow Month: Metamorphosis

What is the most special thing about caterpillars? They all hold the potential to turn into a striking, unique butterfly! Caterpillars undergo a transformation process called metamorphosis - they start out as hungry caterpillars, then form a chrysalis, then they emerge from their chrysalis as a winged, unmistakeable butterfly! In this lesson, participants learn different forms of various caterpillar/butterfly species and try to match them to each phase of their life.

At Duke Farms, August marks Monarch and Meadow Month as we focus on the multitude of magnificent stories of the interactions between and among this biodiverse ecosystem. The monarch butterfly is certainly one of the featured creatures, but as the month unfolds, you will soon discover through activities, lesson plans, videos, book links, and creative resources, much more about why our meadows need to be maintained and preserved.
