Sustainability September: Permeable Pavement

How does sustainability impact what kind of pavement you use? An underdog in sustainability in shared spaces is permeable pavement. Permeable pavement is a form of pedestrian or vehicle pathway that allows stormwater to infiltrate through or go around the material, thus absorbing into the soil underneath. The benefits? A reduction in flooding during storms and clean stormwater runoff that is filtered back into the ground. There are many materials that can be used when installing permeable surfaces - permeable pavers, permeable concrete, permeable asphalt, or permeable rubber.

“We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

Foreword, A Sand County Almanac

Sustainability September will highlight how Duke Farms serves as a model of environmental stewardship and ways that you can infuse practices in your home, community, and workplace that encourage a cleaner greener life for generations to come while also combating climate change.
